Glenn Begley greets the audience at an event of the American National Academy of Science. He did research at universities for years, then went into industry. Now he tells what he experienced when he went there to reproduce university experiments:
"During the time I was in charge of research for the Amgen company, we could not reproduce the results in 47 out of 53 academic studies. The extreme example was a researcher I once had breakfast with. It was about a cancer study he had published in the journal Cancer Cell and I said to him: We have replicated your experiment a hundred times and never got your results. He replied: Oh yes, we also tried it about a dozen times and got this result once, otherwise no more. But we then decided to present exactly that result in our paper."
Science rubbish. Why research doesn't deliver what it promises. Normally, preclinical basic research proceeds relatively silently. Here, scientists search for progress in small-scale experiments: Does an active substance attack cancer cells? What kind of catheter can be used to dissolve blood clots in the brain? If the experiments show that something works, it can then be tested on test subjects in large clinical trials. The better the preclinical research, the greater the chance that a clinical trial will advance medicine. So much for the principle. But in recent years there has been an increase in voices like Glenn Begley accusing preclinical research of major shortcomings:
"Two things particularly shocked me about this story. One is that the cancer researcher told me this at all. I guess he just thought it was okay. And secondly, that the publication didn't say a word about the fact that the experiment couldn't be reconfirmed despite being repeated several times."
Critics think 80 per cent of preclinical research is rubbish
A team of researchers from Bayer Health Care reported in 2011: only a quarter of the preclinical studies that were checked in their own laboratory could be confirmed there. The renowned medical journal "Lancet" devoted an entire series of articles to the preclinical research problem in 2014. The scientist John Ioannidis, who works at Stanford University, confirms the statement he made ten years ago: 80 per cent of preclinical research is "rubbish". An estimated 85 per cent of research resources are wasted on studies that are not fit for purpose.
The British health researcher Lain Chalmers estimates the loss at 200 billion dollars for the year 2010 alone. Is the level of preclinical research really that bad?

The main reason for my wish to change this society is that so many human skills have no chance to come to fruition. Instead they are used in a really sick way so that people are maintaining their own suffering from wars, hunger and illness. But it can not be changed "top-down", only in some kind of "grassroots revolution" or better "evolution" where more and more people work together to get rid of TPTB (whoever that is).
No need for a "big event" but development. One of my ideas to reach it: Don't play "their" games - don't use "their" rules - don't think in the box of "their" paradigms.
It's more "refuse" than "resist" - without too much ideology. You don't need to know much about "what's going on behind the curtains", it's mainly to create your own rules together with like-minded people.
That is what I mean with "I'm on the side of the people".

Denmark Set to Send 4 Fighter Jets, Frigate to Baltic States
MURMANSK (Sputnik) - Copenhagen is planning to send four F-16 interceptors and a frigate to the Baltic States to support NATO, which sees the threat of a real military conflict in Europe, Danish Defense Minister Trine Bramsen said on Monday.

The main reason for my wish to change this society is that so many human skills have no chance to come to fruition. Instead they are used in a really sick way so that people are maintaining their own suffering from wars, hunger and illness. But it can not be changed "top-down", only in some kind of "grassroots revolution" or better "evolution" where more and more people work together to get rid of TPTB (whoever that is).
No need for a "big event" but development. One of my ideas to reach it: Don't play "their" games - don't use "their" rules - don't think in the box of "their" paradigms.
It's more "refuse" than "resist" - without too much ideology. You don't need to know much about "what's going on behind the curtains", it's mainly to create your own rules together with like-minded people.
That is what I mean with "I'm on the side of the people".
