President Castillo’s family leaves for Mexico

The family of Peru's ousted President Pedro Castillo has left Peru for Mexico after the latter offered them asylum. Castillo remains in detention in Peru.

Peru's foreign minister had earlier granted Mr Castillo's wife and children safe passage from the Mexican embassy in Lima to the airport. The Mexican ambassador to Lima also departed on board the same plane after Peru had ordered him to leave the country within 72 hours.

Peru's foreign ministry said in its social media accounts that it was expelling Ambassador Pablo Monroy because "of the repeated statements by that country's highest authorities about the political situation in Peru".

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Department of Labor has fined the owner of a North Carolina Chick-fil-A for paying employers in meals in lieu of wages.
The department said Good Name 22:1 LLC of Hendersonville will have to pay $6,450 in civil penalties plus $235 back pay to seven employees.
The owner was accused of allowing three underage employees "to either operate, load or unload a trash compactor" which violates federal child labor laws.
Investigators also found out that the owner paid certain employees, who were asked to direct traffic, in meal vouchers, another labor violation.
"Protecting our youngest workers continues to be a top priority for the Wage and Hour Division," Wage and Hour Division District Director Richard Blaylock said in an online statement. "Child labor laws ensure that when young people work, the work does not jeopardize their health, well-being or educational opportunities. In addition, employers are responsible to pay workers for all of the hours worked and the payment must be made in cash or legal tender."

In August 2022, a Florida Chick-fil-A was fined $12,478 for allowing several underage employees to work past 7 p.m. and more than three hours during school days.

Ellison pleaded guilty to seven counts, including wire and securities fraud and conspiracy to commit money laundering,
which carry a maximum sentence of 110 years in prison, while Wang pleaded guilty to four counts of fraud, with a maximum 50-year sentence.

Concurrently, the Securities and Exchange Commission and the Commodity Futures Trading Commission also filed civil lawsuits
against the 28-year-old Ellison and 29-year-old Wang, accusing them of fraud.

“As part of their deception, we allege that Caroline Ellison and Sam Bankman-Fried schemed to manipulate the price of FTT,
an exchange crypto security token that was integral to FTX, to prop up the value of their house of cards,” said SEC chair Gary Gensler.
Furthermore, as CEO of the FTX trading affiliate, Ellison “used FTX’s customer assets to pay Alameda’s debts”
and diverted billions of dollars of depositors’ money to the company to fill a hole caused by a crypto market crash in May, the SEC’s complaint alleges.

The CFTC said Wang had a hand in creating some of the algorithms that underpinned FTX, which allowed Alameda
“to maintain an essentially unlimited line of credit” on the exchange, giving it an “unfair advantage” over regular depositors.
“These critical code features and structural exceptions allowed Alameda to secretly and recklessly siphon FTX customer assets from the FTX platform.”

Both defendants are co-operating with the SEC, the agency said. The CFTC said they were not contesting their liability.

Not a single one of Germany’s 18 modernized Puma tanks intended for the NATO Rapid Reaction Force (NRF)
were deemed fit for action during a recent military drill, according to reports by German news outlet Der Spiegel.
The Puma infantry fighting vehicles were expected to be used by NATO’s NRF,
however their operation problems are the latest in a long line of failures affecting Germany’s military capabilities.
According to Army Inspector General Alfons Mais, “there was an unexpectedly high number of failures in the demanding exercise conditions.
So far, the Puma combat vehicle has proven to be increasingly reliable in terms of operational readiness.”
