I also attended high school in the 1980s, but luckily a very old-fashioned, traditional German Latin-school. Most of my teachers were WW II veterans. My first contact with real life was during the 1990s in University and this was a culture shock!

My junior school (1976-1983) was very strict, my teachers there, as were yours, WW11 vets. Our headmaster was stationed in Greece during the war, my last teacher there was an "arse-end Charlie" tail gunner. It was Secondary school where teachers were younger, bringing their political agenda into the classroom and generally behaving like young children. If it was an attempt to somehow identify with the pupils, it didn't work for me.
