Houthi rebels said they are beginning a unilateral withdrawal from Hodeidah

A deal brokered by the UN in Sweden in December stipulated a retraction of all forces from three key Red Sea ports as a first step to a longer comprehensive peace agreement.
But until Saturday, neither side had moved.

In a major breakthrough, Mohammed al-Houthi, the head of the rebels’ Supreme Revolutionary Committee, confirmed his fighters would start pulling back at 10 am (0700 GMT) from Hodeidah port, Saleef port, used for grain, and Ras Isa, used for oil.

The Houthi leader said the rebels had been forced to act unilaterally after the Saudi-backed government repeatedly delayed a parallel withdrawal from parts of the city

“The [rebel] army and committees are withdrawing unilaterally as a result of the refusal of the countries of the US-British-Saudi-Emirati aggression and their allies to implement the [Stockholm] accord,” the rebel leader said on Twitter.

Moammar al-Eryani, the information minister of Yemen’s internationally recognised government, welcomed the UN announcement but warned the rebels might be trying to “mislead” the world.

The first day of a withdrawal of forces by Yemen's Houthi movement from three of Yemen's Red Sea ports went "in accordance with established plans", the head of a U.N. mission to monitor the deal said on Sunday."All three ports were monitored simultaneously by United Nations teams as the military forces left the ports and the Coast Guard took over responsibility for security," Lt. Gen. Michael Lollesgaard, head of the U.N.'s Redeployment Coordination Committee (RCC), said in a statement.

BEIRUT, LEBANON (5:10 P.M.) – The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) suffered heavy casualties in the northeastern countryside of the Latakia Governorate, today, after they attempted to capture the key mountaintop town of Kabani near the Idlib border.

Led by the 42nd Brigade (Ghiath Forces) of the 4th Armored Division, the Syrian Arab Army began the assault by firing a large number of missiles towards the jihadist positions in Kabani.

Following the missile strikes, the Syrian Arab Army made their first major push to capture Kabani from the jihadist rebels of the Turkestan Islamic Party (TIP) and Hay’at Tahrir Al-Sham.

However, per a military source in Latakia, the Syrian Army suffered heavy losses during the attack, which forced them to fall back to the southern slope of the Zuwayqat Mountain.

The source said the total number of casualties is still unknown at the moment, but put the estimate between 20-25 killed or wounded.

Kabani is located on the highest mountain in the Latakia Governorate; this has made it incredibly difficult for the Syrian Army and their allies to capture.

Due to its proximity to the Idlib Governorate and strategic city of Jisr Al-Shughour, Kabani is considered a top priority for the Syrian military in the Latakia Governorate.

Washington has reportedly requested a meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin, according to Russian newspaper Kommersant. If confirmed, a meeting could take place on the sidelines of the upcoming G20 summit.

Citing a US State Department source, Kommersant said on Monday that the likelihood of a meeting between the two leaders is high. Washington is now waiting on Moscow’s response, the report claimed.

Such a meeting could potentially take place on the sidelines of the upcoming G20 summit in Osaka, Japan, at the end of next month.

Russian Deputy FM Sergey Ryabkov told RIA Novosti that Pompeo and Lavrov will likely also discuss the rumored Putin-Trump meeting.

The report comes less than two weeks after Trump and Putin discussed trade, arms control, and geopolitical issues in a lengthy phone conversation. Although cleared of all accusations of ‘Russian collusion’ by Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s final report, Trump was nevertheless excoriated by the American media for the phone call, as he was for meeting with Putin in Helsinki last summer.

RT has reached out to the US State Department for comment on the unconfirmed meeting plans, and is awaiting a response.
