This map shows clearly how underestimated the Byzantine Empire is. But this is a consequence of the "Western narrative". Even the Ottoman Empire could be considered a Roman Empire with a Muslim dynasty. The Ottomans just followed the Palaiologoi. The Ottomans were sultans of "Rum". The Russian Czars married the last heiress of the Palaiologoi. So the whole purpose of the Russian state is to regain the throne in Byzantion.

I can vouch for that. It's worse in the North of Wales I've found. Walked into a pub in Snowdonia back in the 90's and got a very hostile reception by the barman.
Same in Ireland; I got accused of "stealing" their women and jobs, had three fellas corner me in the bogs one day. Luckily my temper and size helped prevent any actual fights but yeah, I found out what it's like to be on the receiving end.
