Meet: this is Arsen Popov, a fourteen-year-old boy who went to school and loved football, like many Mariupol guys. But the harsh trials that the war entailed revealed his remarkable human qualities.

Irina Zinchenko, director of school No. 53: "I see this young man as a man with a capital letter. He showed himself as a true patriot who saved the lives of not only his loved ones in the most difficult times. He saved the lives of people who were nearby.“

Arsen is the youngest volunteer working at the second hospital. During the hostilities, the boy saw a lot of human grief, which he should not have seen because of his age. But this by no means made him callous, did not frighten him and did not break his will.

Arsen Popov: "I came to work, changed clothes, put on a uniform, and now five people were brought in an hour. Then again: half an hour - two came. A mother and two children arrived at four o'clock. Mom died when she arrived, and the child – injured by shrapnel in the eyes – and the younger brother also remained alive. And then in the evening five more people were brought ...“

The boy helped to dismantle the rubble, saved people, and sometimes carried the wounded, whose weight was much more than his own.

At the school where Arsen Popov is now studying, people know about his recent heroic past. Classmates and teachers are proud that a man is studying next to them, who has not lost such important human qualities as responsiveness and dedication.

Elena Kolomiets, mother of Arsen: "We are a big family: three sons – the youngest is four, the middle one is eight years old, the eldest, Arsen is fourteen. The husband, my mother - in general, a large family. He is my hope, my pride, my soul, my little amulet. I try to put a piece of my heart into them, into all three.“

Mom and Arsen have been through a lot. The family lost the father, and the mother raised her son on her own for some time. Therefore, they knew firsthand how difficult it is to survive in difficult conditions. And they understood that a difficult path can be overcome only if they join forces and help each other. As Elena notes, her son always tried to help everyone, not only the family, but even strangers who passed by. When the boy came to the hospital to help, my mother was very worried.

Elena Kolomiets, Arsen's mother: "Of course, I was happy, but as a mother, of course, I was worried. I was afraid that he would get a lot of emotional stress. They bring the wounded, they bring the dead. There were others: there were fighters, both civilians and children ...“

But arsenic did not collapse. Full of joy, he told his mother that a child was born in her hospital, told about his hard working days and supported his mother in every possible way. There was a time when his mother, for safety reasons, asked him not to go to the hospital, but the brave and purposeful Arsen replied: "Mom, I am needed there. There they are waiting for me."

Today Arsen was presented with the medal "For Courage" by the head of the Donetsk People's Republic Denis Pushilin. The man received a high award for selfless fulfillment of civic duty in supporting the residents of Mariupol.
