There were some hints towards Israeli subs earlier. It could explain reports about French firgate involved in attack. Int the same way as Israeli used Russian plane as shield they could use French frigate as cover for their submarine launch.

Following recent reactions and coments regarding the incident I have to retract my words written earlier. I wrote thet there is no one who benefits largerly from this situation and named Israel and NATO as biggest losers in this event. It could be wrong assumption.
"Cui bono?" shachalnur asked on previous page. Against earlier odds it is Israel and NATO actually.
What if the real goal of yesterday's agression were not some bogus alleged weapon factories for Hezbollah? What if the real goal was exactly what happened - downing of Russian anti-submarine recon plane? Not because the plane itself. But because of following events.
Israel knows well that there is little to none, except direct military response, what can be done in return. If the plane was on routine patrols it could be easy tool in operation aimed to cause cracks among Russia and allied forces and hurt Russian credibility and decisiveness. Many pro-Syrian and resistance accounts already mock lack of apropriate counteractions, blame Russia for cooperation with Israel etc. Exactly this could be mission objective. Now Israel will blow whispers in attempt to erode partnership among Russia, Syria and Iran. They already blame the both latter for the incident. Netanyahu already offered that he will send airforce chief to Moscow with all detailed informations regarding the incident...

It is a concern the lack of response (or a very quiet response) from Russia on the "incident"
The only one who win on this (as always) is Israel.. that once again, it demostrate to everyone that it can do anything, and walk away with it.. with 0 consequences whatsoever...
This hurt Russia and its allies the most.. confidence will go down... and Israel will keep escalating its attacks now, since they know nothing can or will be done against them

I think Israel is showing what she has done for decades: She can't be trusted.

Well, Israel/NATO know that Russia is defiant regarding Syrian government and it won't abandon Damascus. Also it is clear that they won't dare to attack Russia openly. Thus they use tricks and deceptions. One of them could be yesterday's incident as I wrote above.
In short term Israel/NATO seems to be benefiting from this. Even the fact that Syrian air defense accidentaly downed Russian plane is very damaging for the both allies. And current Putin's reaction can be seen as submission to Israel. Thus many comments mocking or condemning the lack of action.
However, in long term, we already learned that calm response can be very wise. One example is Turkish downing of Russian bomber jet. A few years later Russia and Turkey establish demilitarized zone in Idlib, Turkish stream is in process and cracks between NATO/US and Turkey are bigger and bigger. So time will tell how this yesterday's event will develope.
Oh, and regarding "Putin is controlled by the same forces" - I don't see any such suggestions. Basicly, if he would be their man then he would continue Yeltsin's job. Instead he recovered Russia. That's something they didn't want for sure...
