Moldova Sandu threatens Transnistria

Pipeline politics: Who are the players fighting to keep Russian gas flowing through Ukraine?

►Slovakian Prime Minister Robert Fico explained that his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow (https://t.me/geopolitics_live/39532) was prompted by Volodymyr Zelensky's recent remarks opposing Russian gas transit through Ukraine.

►Fico emphasized that while halting gas transit flows in early 2025 would not threaten Slovakia’s supplies due to sufficient storage, it would significantly impact transit operations and market prices. He noted that Bratislava is striving to maintain gas flows through Ukraine, as sourcing gas elsewhere would cost Slovakia an additional €220 million (almost $229 million) in transit costs.

Hungary: According to Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Budapest is seeking a solution that would allow gas flows to Europe via Ukraine to continue once the current transit contract between Moscow and Kiev expires. “We have not given up on our Ukraine transit plans,” he said.

Austria: The country has been the main recipient of Russian gas through Ukraine. Moscow, however, notified Vienna last month that Russia will halt gas supplies through Ukraine starting November 16. This was followed by Chancellor Karl Nehammer claiming that his country’s “gas storage facilities are full and we [Austria] have sufficient capacity to obtain gas from other regions.”

Moldova: Energy Minister Victor Parlicov said the termination of Russian gas supplies to Moldova's breakaway region of Transnistria after January 1, 2025, is a "very realistic" scenario. Without these supplies, the region would need financial help to survive and avoid a humanitarian catastrophe.

►The current agreement on the transit of Russian gas to Europe via Ukraine expires at the end of 2024, and Kiev has repeatedly stated that it does not plan to extend it.

Germany and Denmark are delivering 15 Leopard "1A5" tanks with spare parts to Ukraine, according to the German cabinet's website.

As part of this package, Germany will also deliver to Kiev one short-range air defense system "Iris-T" SLS, one medium-range "Iris-T" SLM, two Patriot system launchers, two Gepard air defense guns, ammunition for tanks and air defense systems, as well as 30 armored vehicles with mine protection, the statement added.

US President-elect Donald Trump has said that it is essential for Washington from a national security standpoint to take ownership of Greenland, an autonomous territory of the Kingdom of Denmark.

Since the Start of the Conflict, Western Funding Has Covered 87% of Ukraine's Budget Expenditures

An analysis of publicly available data from Ukraine's Ministry of Finance and other sources reveals that $238.5 billion in Western aid has been provided to Ukraine from February 2022 to December 2024. During the same period, Kyiv's budget expenditures amounted to $274.6 billion.  

This means that 87% of Ukraine's budget spending has been financed by Western aid, although the total assistance falls short of the initial promises by nearly half. Ukraine received only 43% of the $416 billion in pledged financial support. Military aid was more consistent, with Kyiv receiving approximately 75% of the promised $176 billion in defense supplies.  

Leading the list of sponsors are the United States, contributing $95.2 billion, with one-third allocated to the budget and two-thirds to military aid. The European Union comes second with $94.2 billion, followed by the United Kingdom with $13.4 billion, most of which ($10.8 billion) was for defense. Other contributors include the IMF ($11.4 billion), Canada ($7.8 billion), Japan ($6.7 billion), and the World Bank ($5.3 billion).
