The collapse of the Syrian government is fundamentally a collapse of economy. In 2020, Syria's GDP was only $11.2 billion, and its oil and grain producing areas were occupied by Kurds or the US military. The Syrian government had no income to support soldiers' salaries and had to carry out large-scale disarmament.

The Assad government certainly does not have sufficient ruling foundations. Alawites only make up 10% of Syria's population. Moreover, the Assad government is secular, and both Assad and his wife have received Western education for a long time. They simply cannot unite those religious extremists wearing headscarves. In the Middle East, religious extremist forces can always defeat those secularists.

The biggest winner this time is HTS, a terrorist organization certified by the United States. The United States and Israel are not the winners. They did not expect this. In fact, I think Israel does not want the forces of Ottoman Türkiye to occupy the whole Syria. They can pose a much bigger threat to Israel's security than the weak Assad.

In today's Syria, there is no country, no government, and no order. There is only fragmentation, warlords, and terrorism. A hell for normal people. I have slight problem with what "RW" wrote in point 4+5.  As we can see with the back and forth of Jihadists and Banderites between Ukraine and Syria. Russia didn't intervene only to save Assad or Palmyra.

This is something I posted on social media yesterday but neglected to post here. 

I'm going to flush my thoughts out more in detail soon, but for the moment would like to note I'm seeing a lot of flip-flopping from people outside of Syria who previously (including until very recently) were keen to show how much they supported and were proud of Bashar al-Assad, but are now backtracking and denouncing him. This is frankly cowardly, opportunistic, and reveals an absolute lack of integrity. 

[For those still inside of Syria, I understand there is a huge climate of fear of the extremists in power and in the streets. For those terrified Syrians who are posting to merely appease the terrorists dubbed "reformed", I pray they are safe.]

Not only is it sickening to see the rapid about-face of "Syrian patriots" who are now condemning the person they once championed, but that Syrians are told this "transitional government" comprised mostly of takfiri extremists is "moderate & reformed" and what Syria needs to bring Syrians together.  

The terrorists' looting of homes and shops started almost immediately, and although Jolani tidied himself up a little and told CNN & the world he was reformed, once a head-chopper, always a head-chopper. I shudder to think what these criminals will do to the Christians, the Allawis, the Sunnis—yes, they were persecuted, tortured, killed as well by these fanatics, because they didn’t support the non-”revolution”.

We don’t know all the facts, or even most of the facts, on how it transpired that Assad would step down after 13 years of refusing to do so in the face of terrorism created/supported by the West, Gulf, Turkey and Israel.

What has just happened is the worst outcome for Syria and Syrians.

In the face of the accusation narratives rolling out from al-Qaeda control, keep in mind: the Western sanctions were debilitating against Syrian civilians; the US never stopped stealing Syria's oil; the US never stopped backing, training & enabling terrorism in Syria, particularly making use of the illegal occupation base in the east; Israel never stopped illegally bombing Syria; Israel supported, gave medical treatment to the terrorists and coordinated with them in attacks on Syria towns; let's not forget Turkey's role in occupying Syrian land, funneling terrorists in, continuing to support the terrorists, and sending still more in for this invasion of Syria...


Collectively, I've spent around 1.5 years in Syria during the period of 2014-2021, going every year, multiple times a year. During that time, I didn't sit in restaurants or nightclubs, that's not how I was meeting and interacting with Syrians. I met them in the streets, in their homes, in taxis, in markets, in and around the Aleppo citadel, and before that, in centres for displaced people (which were also targeted by the terrorists). I saw Syrians maimed from terrorists mortars in Damascus hospitals, and in Aleppo saw the mutilated bodies of those civilians who didn't survive the terrorist bombing of their city. 

I believe the encounters I had over the years, speaking one-on-one usually in Arabic (sometimes in English) with them were genuine. I believe the sentiments of support they expressed regarding the Syrian Arab Army were genuine, and I believe the support they expressed to me for President Assad was genuine.

In fact, let me add that I also spent around a cumulative half a year in different parts of Lebanon from 2014 till maybe 2018, because each time I had to apply for a journalist visa, I had to wait at least one month, or more, for its approval. Eventually the process was possible by email (I don't remember what year that was), so I didn't have to spend time and money waiting around in Lebanon for the visa.  

But in any case, during those years where waiting in Lebanon was part of the process, I moved out of Beirut and stayed in various areas north and south of Beirut. Everywhere I went, I inevitably encountered Syrians who supported their army & president. Most notably, of course, was during the 2014 elections, when Syrians filled the embassy and road leading up to the embassy. There were so many Syrians determined to vote that the embassy extended voting hours from 7 pm to midnight, and opened a 2nd unscheduled day for the same extended hours. 

While I've not been in Syria since 2021 and can't speak to sentiments on the ground there since then, I’ve seen too much of what these takfiris have done to Syria over the years to believe there is any good to come from them or the flag representing their reign of terror.

Now, Israel has heavily bombarded and invaded Syria, as predicted, is getting closer to Damascus, and the takfiris running the show are doing nothing to stop them, of course. 

There is a dangerous flow of misinformation now, calculated to justify this terrorist takeover of Syria. Don't be quick to jump on the bandwagon of accusations. Think carefully about the messaging we're being inundated by.

HTS* (a terrorist organization banned in Russia), which is currently the main military force in the operation, is considered a terrorist organisation even by Turkey and the US. 

The Syrian National Army, another participant in the attacks, is a group recruited from various jihadist groups and paid by the AKP government. 

With these and similar organisations, there will be no peace or calm in the region.

For months, the Turkish Communist Party has been declaring that preparations are underway to attack Syria under the pretext of the “Israeli threat,” and warning that this would drag the region into new and endless bloody wars. The fall of the Assad government was decided and planned in Washington, Tel Aviv and Ankara, not in Syria.

The US, UK, NATO, Türkiye and Israel armed, financed, trained and directed the jihadists who took over Damascus for more than a decade.
It is clear that rule by these groups will not bring peace and reconciliation to Syria. It is far more likely to lead to escalating sectarian violence, a failed state, millions of refugees, and further destabilisation of the entire region. And, as in the case of Libya, the imperialist powers and monopolies will use this opportunity to plunder the oil wealth.

These refugees will be demonised and attacked by the same states that supplied the weapons to the jihadists who forced them to flee. When you export weapons, you import refugees. Yet Keir Starmer has hailed the jihadist victory in Syria, saying that “stopping the boats” [carrying migrants across the Channel] is his top priority.

Solidarity with the Syrian people at this time, especially with ethnic and religious minorities, women and our comrades from the Syrian Communist Party (Baghdash) and the Syrian Communist Party (Unified) who are likely to face violence and repression from the jihadists.

In view of the tragic events unfolding in Syria, a country that for more than ten years has been the scene of one of the most fierce and heroic battles against imperialism and the reactionary forces destabilising the region, the Communist Party of Spain (PCE) issues the following statement.

The takeover of Damascus by an Islamist terrorist group means the fall of the Syrian government and the disappearance of a multi-confessional, secular state, a key ally in the anti-imperialist resistance in the Middle East. It is a crushing blow to progressive and leftist forces around the world.

This situation could mean not only the disappearance of a sovereign state, but also the collapse of a stronghold of resistance to powers seeking to impose their dominance over the region.

The new scenario that is emerging in Syria is that of a failed state, a power vacuum that could turn into another laboratory of chaos, as happened in Libya.

The intervention of powers such as Israel, the United States and Turkey in the conflict played a decisive role, further destabilising a region already suffering from the consequences of decades of imperialist interventions.

The resistance of the Syrian people, who fought for more than 13 years against a coalition of external forces and internal groups pursuing interests alien to national sovereignty, was heroic.

But in recent weeks, that resistance has suffered a serious blow, and Syria's struggle for survival is entering a new phase, with hopes of recovery looking increasingly distant.

The brutal economic blockade imposed by the US and EU has had a devastating impact on the economy and daily lives of Syrians. Added to this is the exhaustion caused by continuous Israeli bombing and Turkey’s continued support for Salafist groups operating inside the country, which has exacerbated the suffering of the population and left the country in a highly vulnerable position.

It is imperative to preserve the territorial integrity of Syria and prevent a de facto partition of the territory between Turkey, Israel, Kurdish communities and Gulf-backed Sunni fundamentalism. Failure to do so will result in a new failed state that will further destabilise the region with a high risk of a global military conflict.

The US authorisation of Ukraine to use US long-range missiles against Russia, the US-sanctioned and US-sponsored offensive by Islamist groups in Syria are steps in the US Democratic Party's militaristic escalation aimed at increasing global military tensions in the last month of Biden's presidency in order to make a period of military détente between the US, Russia and China as difficult as possible.

Throughout history, the Syrian people have demonstrated their strength and resilience, and we are confident that sooner or later this situation will change for the better. 

As in other cases, the struggle of the Syrian people is not only the struggle of Syria, but also of all the peoples of the world fighting for justice, sovereignty and peace.
