Energy and fuel prices continue to rise worldwide, forcing many people to dig even deeper into their pockets. For many people in East African Kenya, the purchase of gas is now unaffordable, so they are forced to resort to a cheaper alternative.

The locals who live along the forests illegally cut down the protected forests in order to be able to sell the charcoal. The deal with the cheaper alternative means that many gas traders have to fear for their work, while the sale of charcoal is increasing. Victor Boiyo, an expert in environmental policy and management at the University of Nazarene, fears that deforestation could lead to "one of the worst disasters" and that the goal of curbing climate change may no longer be achieved.
