Президент Сирии Башар Асад принял у себя нового министра иностранных дел Ирана Хосейна Амира Абдоллахияна. Встреча состоялась после визита Абдоллахияна в Багдад, где он участвовал в конференции по сотрудничеству и партнёрству.

В ходе переговоров Асад и Абдоллахиян обсудили ряд вопросов, с акцентом на экономику и сферу торговли. Стороны также обменялись мнениями относительно обстановки в регионе и мире, отдельно остановившись на ситуации в Афганистане. Абдоллахиян также рассказал сирийскому президенту об итогах прошедшей в Багдаде конференции. В этой связи глава иранской дипломатии выразил несогласие с решением организаторов не приглашать представителя Дамаска на мероприятие.
По итогам встречи Асад подчеркнул, что стабильное партнёрство между Сирией и Ираном демонстрирует положительные результаты и соответствует интересам двух стран. Абдоллахиян, в свою очередь отметил совместные успехи иранцев и сирийцев в борьбе с международным терроризмом. Он также напомнил, что Сирия и Иран находятся под действием серьёзных экономических санкций со стороны США, однако в состоянии сохранять суверенитет и работать на благо своего народа.
